Why asking for a date of birth
solves nothing.
Self-declared signup is easy to get around
Minors enter a false date of birth at signup and nobody checks it. The platform collects data and serves content as if it were dealing with an adult, taking on real risk without knowing it.
Inappropriate content reaches minors with no technical barrier
Recommendation algorithms and user-generated content reach minors' profiles because the platform has no technical way to tell the age range of the person on the other side.
Minors' data collected without valid consent
Art. 14 of the LGPD (Brazil's data protection law) requires guardian consent to process children's data. Without an age check at signup, the platform cannot show that consent was validly obtained.
